In Spanish. First part only Felipe Cossío del Pomar (1888–1981), a Peruvian painter and left-wing political activist, wrote this full-scale biography of his friend Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre (1895–1979), the founder of the Alianza Popular Revolucionaria Americana (APRA, the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance). It was published in Mexico by Editorial Cultura in two parts. The first part, covering 1895 to 1931 and running to 379 pages, appeared in 1961. The second, covering 1931 to 1969 and running to 350 pages, followed in 1969. The first part traces Haya's life from his birth in Trujillo through his early travels and the beginnings of the Aprista movement. The second follows him from 1931 onward, a period that included imprisonment in Lima's penitentiary. Cossío knew his subject closely. The two became friends in the 1920s, and he visited Haya in exile in Mexico City after the Leguía regime deported Haya in October 1923. Cossío himself spent long years in exile in Mexico and elsewhere. The work is therefore a partisan insider's account rather than a detached history, and that is exactly why it is valuable as a primary source for APRA's formative decades. It expands on Cossío's earlier and shorter Haya de la Torre, el indoamericano (1939). || Political parties -- Peru. Haya de la Torre, Víctor Raúl, 1895-1979. Haya de la Torre, Víctor Raúl, 1895-1979
