Scarce. PhD Dissertation | Sokrates Theodore Pantelides, also known in academic and scientific circles as Sokrates T. Pantelides—was a distinguished physicist and engineer. Born on November 20, 1948, in Limassol, Cyprus, he later became an American national. He earned a BSc in Physics with Highest Honors from Northern Illinois University (1969), followed by an MSc (1970) and a PhD in Physics (1973) from the University of Illinois . After a lengthy tenure at IBM’s research division in Yorktown Heights—progressing from research staff member to senior manager and technical assistant to the vice president for science and technical affairs between 1975 and 1991—he transitioned to academia at Vanderbilt University in Nashville beginning in 1994 . At Vanderbilt, he eventually became the William A. and Nancy F. McMinn Professor of Physics, later chairing the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and serving as a distinguished visiting scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory .Pantelides’s recognition extends through numerous prestigious honors as a Fellow of several leading professional societies, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE, American Physical Society, Materials Research Society, and American Association for the Advancement of Science .
