"The Russo-Finnish War, also known as the Winter War, occurred from November 30, 1939, to March 13, 1940. It began when the Soviet Union, seeking to secure a buffer for Leningrad, invaded Finland after the latter refused to cede several border areas. Despite being outnumbered, the Finnish forces used their knowledge of the terrain and harsh winter conditions to resist effectively. However, the superior numbers and resources of the Soviets eventually led to the Finnish surrender. The Moscow Peace Treaty ended the war, with Finland ceding 11% of its territory, including the city of Viipuri (Vyborg), to the Soviet Union. The war had significant international repercussions, leading to the Soviet Union's expulsion from the League of Nations and influencing Hitler's decision to invade the Soviet Union in 1941." —Bing
