In the early 1960s, Robert Bly's first poetry collection, Silence in the Snowy Fields, came as a fresh breeze to clear away the stale odor that hung over much American poetry. Influenced by Chinese and Spanish poetry, the Snowy Fields poems spoke a language of images rather than exhausted abstractions.
