Heavily illustrated with over 100 b&w photoplates. Account of Columbia’s University's pioneering Iranist on the most arduous of his journeys, an extended tour of Persia and Central Asia in 1903, made chiefly to see the surviving Zoroastrian communities and study their customs and religion firsthand. Jackson (1862–1937), a New Yorker trained at Columbia and in Germany under Karl Geldner, headed Columbia’s new Department of Indo-Iranian Languages from 1895. His Avestan grammar and Avesta Reader served generations of students, his Zoroaster, the Prophet of Ancient Iran (1899) made his name as an authority on Iranian religion, and he edited the thirteen-volume Columbia University Indo-Iranian Series. The route runs from the Aras River through snow to Tabriz and around Lake Urmia, the traditional homeland of Zoroaster, then on across the country. He blends travel narrative with scholarship that draws on authorities from Zoroaster and Herodotus through the Arab geographers, and gratefully records the hospitality of the Christian missionaries who housed him along the way. Illustrated with more than two hundred photographs, mostly his own, plus a map and a color frontispiece by Jay Hambidge of Darius sacrificing to Ormazd. Followed by a sequel on later travels, From Constantinople to the Home of Omar Khayyam (1911). He returned to Persia with the American-Persian Relief Commission after the First World War.Travel.
