First edition of Rubio Mañé's study of the Laffite brothers, published in Mexico City in 1938 when the author was thirty-four — an early work by the historian who would go on to direct the Archivo General de la Nación from 1960 to 1977, sit in the Academia Mexicana de la Historia, and publish some thirty monographs and more than two hundred articles on the colonial history of Mexico and the regional history of his native Yucatán. Where Anglophone writing on Jean and Pierre Laffite has been drawn chiefly from Louisiana and Texas sources, Rubio Mañé approaches the brothers from the Mexican and Yucatecan side, grounding a subject long given over to romance in archival research; his sources are set out at pages 235-236.
