"A wild horse hunt in hostile country!" | Native Americans. Oglala | Donald Emmet Worcester (1915–2003) was a working academic historian who wrote children's books on the side, and the Lone Hunter quartet is where the two halves of him meet. He took a B.A. from Bard in 1939, an M.A. from Berkeley in 1941, served in the U.S. Naval Reserve through the war, and finished a Berkeley Ph.D. in 1947; he then taught at the University of Florida until 1963 before moving to Texas Christian University, where he chaired the history department, and he edited the *Hispanic American Historical Review* from 1960 to 1965 and served as president of the Western History Association in 1974–75. His scholarship ran on two tracks that rarely share a shelf — Latin America (*Sea Power and Chilean Independence*, *Brazil: From Colony to World Power*, *Bolívar*) and the American Southwest (*The Apaches: Eagles of the Southwest*, *The Chisholm Trail*, *The War in the Nueces Strip*) — unified by a stated conviction that history is made of complexities rather than dualities, a formulation later Southwestern historians have taken up. The four Lone Hunter books appeared in quick succession from Oxford University Press and then Henry Z. Walck — *Lone Hunter's Gray Pony* (1956), *Lone Hunter and the Cheyennes* (1957), *Lone Hunter's First Buffalo Hunt* (1958), and *Lone Hunter and the Wild Horses* (1959) — all illustrated by **Harper Johnson**, running about 90 to 100 pages each, following a Lakota boy through pony, raid, vision, and hunt. Texas Christian University Press reissued several in 1985 in shortened texts with new illustrations by Paige Pauley.
