In Turkish. Kemal Tahir, 1910-1973. Nâzım Hikmet, 1902-1963. -- Correspondence.¶ "Nâzım Hikmet Ran was a renowned Turkish poet, playwright, and novelist. Born on January 15, 1902, in Thessaloniki, Ottoman Empire (now Greece), Hikmet is often considered one of the most important 20th-century poets. His works have been translated into more than 50 languages, and he is celebrated as Turkey's first modernist poet and one of the pioneers of the "socially conscious" poetry. Hikmet's life was marked by his intense political engagement. He was a communist, which led to his repeated imprisonment in Turkey and contributed to his self-imposed exile. The themes of his works often revolved around social justice, the plights of the working classes, anti-war sentiments, and love for his homeland. His best-known works include "Human Landscapes from My Country," an epic poem that is seen as one of the most important works of 20th-century Turkish literature, and the poem "On Living," among others. Hikmet's influence on Turkish and world literature is significant. His poetry continues to be widely read and loved for its passionate commitment to human freedom and dignity. Nâzım Hikmet died on June 3, 1963, in Moscow due to a heart attack. Despite living much of his life in exile, Hikmet's influence in his home country was profound, and he remains a cherished figure in Turkish literature and culture."
