"As an art form, portraiture has been quite unfashionable since the 19th century, its social and political functions assumed by the development of photography, film and television. Although appreciation of portraiture is now undergoing a minor renaissance, it is in many ways still under-used as an historical source--both in the case of the 'original' (usually an oil painting) and the 'copy' (usually an engraving).
