Contents, The test. The prophetess. Uncle. The music of the violin. Fools. From the back cover: "These stories, which won Africa's highest literary award in 1984, announce an impressive new voice from South Africa's black townships. Njabulo Ndebele combines assured narrative skill with a delicacy that finds powerful expression by looking at apartheid society. "Our literature," says Ndebele, "ought to seek to move away from an easy preoccupation with demonstrating the obvious existence of oppression. It exists. The task is to explore how and why people can survive under such harsh conditions." About the author: "Njabulo Ndebele grew up in Western Native Township, Johannesburg, and later in Charterston Location, Nigel, the setting for these stories, which first appeared in the black literary magazine 'Staffrider' in South Africa. The collection won the 1984 NOMA Award for Publishing in Africa, the continent's highest literary award. Njabulo Ndebele holds an M.A. from Cambridge University and a Ph.D. from the University of Denver. He has taught African, Afro-American and English Literature at the University of Lesotho and at Yale University. Cover art by
