"Ayrton (1921–1975) was a British artist and writer known for his work as a sculptor, painter, printmaker, stage designer, and novelist. His work often drew on classical themes and mythology, and he had a particular fascination with the myth of the Minotaur and the labyrinth, which he explored in both his visual art and his writing. Ayrton studied art at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and the St John's Wood Art School. He held his first solo exhibition in 1942 and quickly gained recognition for his distinctive style. As a sculptor, he is perhaps best known for his bronze sculptures, many of which are on public display in the UK. In addition to his visual art, Ayrton also wrote several novels and art criticism. His books include "The Maze Maker," a novel based on the myth of the Minotaur, and "The Testament of Daedalus," a fictional autobiography of the mythical Greek craftsman Daedalus. Ayrton was also known for his work in stage design, particularly for his collaborations with the ballet choreographer John Cranko."
