The first book about LSD by a woman. Lucidly written. Introduction by psychologist Robert S. Davidson. "Jane Dunlap" was the pen name of Adelle Davis (1904–1974), the nutritionist and best-selling health-food author. That a figure of her reputation wrote a first-person LSD memoir, under a pseudonym, gives the book its notoriety. According to the dust jacket, she volunteered as the subject of a medically supervised LSD study and recorded her visions in detail. The book narrates those sessions as cosmic and religious visions. Chapter titles include "A Psychologist Explains" and "Lived Billions of Years in Eight Hours," and the imagery includes the Buddha under the bodhi tree, Christ, kachina figures, Pegasus, the aurora borealis, and jeweled caverns. It ends with reflections on psychosomatic illness and on who should take the drug. It belongs to the pre-Leary, clinical-era psychedelic literature alongside Huxley's The Doors of Perception (1954).
