In Italian. Classici Ricciardi; 44 [series]. ¶ Ricci’s text, with an introduction by Natalino Sapegno, taken from his 1965 Ricciardi volume of the verse and minor prose, where the text rests on five manuscripts independent of the Mannelli codex. Boccaccio’s late dream-vision and misogynist invective: the narrator, despairing over a widow who will not return his love, calls on Death, falls asleep, and meets a spirit who warns him against the lust of women, the spirit being the widow’s dead husband. Traditionally placed around 1355, though Padoan argued for 1365, the year of the Avignon embassy to Urban V. Title still debated, with commentators long noting its sound echoing the author’s own surname. Of the 79 surviving manuscripts, none has yet yielded a critical edition, so Ricci’s text served for decades as the standard reading text. Later the Einaudi CD-ROM Letteratura italiana of 2000 and the IntraText full-text concordance both used it as their base. ¶ Italian fiction -- To 1400
