"The Pine-Oak Woodland in Southern Arizona and adjacent Mexico is a rich habitat for a variety of bird species. The Cooper Ornithological Society has published detailed reports on the avifauna of this region, comparing the numbers of breeding birds in different stations within the pine-oak woodland. These stations are located in southeastern Arizona and extend into central Sonora, with a range from about 5500 to 6500 feet in elevation. The woodland features a mix of encinal (oak woodland) below and ponderosa pine forest above, creating a smooth transition between the two zones. The study involved walking along roads, streams, or canyons to census the birds, with a focus on the Pygmy Owl, which is known to rouse most of the small birds". --Publisher
