He is not satisfied with his father's explanation of the name and proceeds to adopt another so that he will, hopefully, be more comfortable in the class. Each change of name only receives laughter and Ashok begins to sulk. The school librarian offers help and explains that his own grandfather was forced to give up his original name when he was sold into slavery. Ashok eventually realizes that he is fortunate in having such an unusual name and takes pride in it."
