An assemblage of drawings and photographs showing Czech architect Antonin Raymond's residential work in Japan completed in the 1920s and 1930s. Trained at Czech Technical University, Raymond immigrated to the United States in 1910 and worked with Cass Gilbert on the Woolworth Building (completed 1913) and Frank Lloyd Wright, eventually traveling with Wright to Tokyo for that city's Imperial Hotel (completed 1921). The self-published Architectural details provides advice for the designer using Raymond's work and philosophy as a model. In interior plans and elevations, sectional drawings, and examples of dramatic self-supporting staircases, concrete proves an optimal material in both aesthetics and durability. Raymond's talent for incorporating traditional Japanese elements {shoji, tatami (grass mats), and hinoki (Japanese cypress) is illuminated in pages of black-and-white photographs, showcasing the realization of his design concepts.1938.
