Scarce. Ukrainian folk songs, with music. Text in Ukrainian. Comprehensive songbook of the Ukrainian folk repertory with musical notation, ranging across the major genres: dumy (the epic recitative laments), Cossack, chumak (the ox-cart salt traders) and burlak (migrant laborers) songs, songs of everyday life, love songs, humorous songs, lullabies and children’s songs. Named for the hurdy-gurdy of the wandering minstrels (lirnyky), who carried the dumy, historical songs and psalms from the sixteenth century until Soviet repression broke up their tradition and its schools in the twentieth. One of a cluster of Ukrainian songbooks issued in the first postwar months, alongside carol collections from Munich and Innsbruck, for a public that wartime had scattered across Austria and Germany.
