She was also an important figure in her own right, particularly known for her work in education and for her role in the Soviet government. Krupskaya was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, into a family of lower-middle-class intellectuals. She became involved in revolutionary activities in her early twenties and met Lenin in 1894, when they were both members of a Marxist study group in St. Petersburg. They married in 1898 while both were in exile in Siberia for their political activities. After the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, Krupskaya held a number of important positions in the Soviet government. She served as deputy minister of education and enlightenment from 1929 to 1939, and she was instrumental in shaping the Soviet Union's educational policies during this period. She was a strong advocate for universal education and literacy, and she worked to make education more accessible to the working class and to women. Krupskaya also wrote extensively on a variety of topics, including education, women's rights, and the role of the Communist Party. Her most famous work is probably her memoir of Lenin, which provides a personal and political portrait of the revolutionary leader. Krupskaya remained politically active until her death in 1939.
