London; New York: Methuen & Co.; E.P. Dutton, [1953]. [5th ed., with addenda]. Tan dust jacket with green text; green cloth-wrapped large octavo with gilt stamping; viii, 541 pages, 355 illustrations; references; index 26 cm A very good (+) copy, clean and tight, with prior owner signature in ink on front flyleaf and modest age-tanning throughout, spine has sunning at exposed areas; dust-jacket has considerable yellowing and chipping at edges, and a couple larger tears that do not alter visibility of title. .

A hefty reference book for the budding entomologist. From the jacket: "This is a textbook of entomology in which the main emphasis throughout is on the functions of the organs and tissues. Descriptions of anatomy are reduced to the minimum needed to make the physiological argument intelligible. It is written to meet the requirements of students of general entomology and comparative physiology, and to assist economic entomologists who require a knowledge of insect physiology in order to appreciate the principles underlying practical measures of control or to understand properly the ecology of insect pests". The aptly named Wigglesworth was a professor of biology at the University of Cambridge and director of the Agrcultural Research Council Unit of Insect Physiology. Part of the "Methuen's Monographs on Biological Subjects" series founded by G.R. De Beer and general editor Michael Abercrombie. Wigglesworth's other noteworthy book is Insect Hormones. One of the most entertaining author-to-title parallelisms in the history of bibliography. // insect physiology, entomology, insects, biology, physiology / **Heavy item(s).
