"Walter Lowenfels was an American poet, journalist, and political activist known for his prolific writing and his commitment to leftist politics. Born on May 10, 1897, in New York City, Lowenfels wrote numerous poems, essays, and anthologies throughout his career, many of which reflected his political beliefs and advocacy for social justice. Lowenfels was a member of the Communist Party, and his political activities often put him at odds with the U.S. government, particularly during the era of McCarthyism in the 1950s. In 1953, he was arrested and charged under the Smith Act for conspiring to overthrow the government, although he was later released. As an author and editor, Lowenfels was known for his innovative and collaborative approach to writing. He pioneered the concept of the "anthology poem," a form of writing that incorporates contributions from many different authors into a single work. He also published several collections of poetry and edited anthologies of work by other writers."
