He was a prolific author and educator, known for making complex scientific concepts accessible to the general public. Thomson held the Regius Chair of Natural History at the University of Aberdeen for over thirty years. His research spanned a wide range of topics within biology, but he is perhaps best known for his work in the field of zoology. Thomson wrote many popular science books aimed at lay audiences, including "The Study of Animal Life" and "The System of Animate Nature". His work was characterized by a desire to synthesize knowledge from various branches of biology and to communicate this knowledge to the public in an accessible way. Thomson was also a proponent of the idea that science and religion could coexist and complement each other, a view he expressed in his Gifford Lectures, later published as "The Outline of Science"."
