Signed and inscribed to no specific person: "With best wishes from Clarence Manion" / "Clarence Manion (1896–1979) was an American conservative jurist and dean of the Notre Dame Law School from 1941 to 1952. He is perhaps best known for his political activism, particularly his efforts to promote conservative causes in the United States during the mid-20th century. Manion was born in Indiana and attended the University of Chicago, where he earned both a bachelor degree and a law degree. After practicing law in Chicago for several years, he joined the faculty of the Notre Dame Law School in 1928, eventually becoming its dean. In the early 1950s, Manion's conservative views led to conflict with the leadership of the University of Notre Dame, and he was asked to step down from his position as dean. After leaving Notre Dame, Manion became involved in conservative political activism. He hosted a radio program, "The Manion Forum," which aired from the mid-1950s until his death and frequently featured prominent conservative guests.Manion was a leading voice in the conservative movement during the 1960s and played a crucial role in Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign. Although Goldwater lost the election, his campaign is often seen as a turning point in American conservatism, laying the groundwork for the rise of Ronald Reagan and other conservative politicians in the late 20th century. Despite his influence, Manion is less well-known than some other figures from this era, in part because he often operated behind the scenes, using his connections and influence to promote conservative causes and candidates. However, he was a major force in shaping the American conservative movement in the mid-20th century. ¶ Conservatisme -- États-Unis. Conservatism.
