Pershing. The battle was part of a larger Allied offensive aimed at reducing the Saint-Mihiel salient, a bulge in the German lines that had existed since the early stages of the war. The AEF, working in concert with French forces, launched a successful attack that eliminated the salient. The Battle was notable for the use of coordinated air and ground forces. The Allies amassed nearly 1,500 aircraft, making it the largest air operation of the war up to that point. The battle also saw the use of tanks and artillery in support of infantry forces. The successful reduction of the Saint-Mihiel salient boosted the morale of the Allied forces and demonstrated the growing effectiveness of the American military. The battle paved the way for the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, which would prove decisive in bringing about the end of the war." —Bing. ¶Saint-Mihiel, Battle of, Saint-Mihiel, France, 1918.
