"Adolphus Warburton Moore (1841-1887) was a prominent figure in the "Golden Age of Alpinism," a period in the mid-nineteenth century when many of the highest peaks in the Alps were climbed for the first time. He was also a well-regarded British civil servant. Moore was born in 1841 into a distinguished family, his father being Sir Charles Moore, 1st Baronet of Appleby. He was educated at Harrow School and at Trinity College, Cambridge. Moore's contributions to mountaineering were notable. He made several first ascents, including the first traverse of the Brenva Spur on Mont Blanc in 1865 and the first ascent of the highest peak of the Ötztal Alps, the Wildspitze, in 1868. Moore was also one of the early members of the Alpine Club, a London-based climbing society that played a key role in the development of mountaineering during the Golden Age of Alpinism. Apart from his mountaineering feats, Moore had a successful career as a civil servant. He joined the India Office in 1862, and over the next several years, he held a variety of positions. By the time of his premature death in 1887, he had risen to the rank of Senior Clerk. Moore's book "The Alps in 1864" is a classic account of Victorian-era mountaineering and remains a key resource for historians of the sport. He is remembered for his pioneering climbs and his significant influence on mountaineering in the Victorian era."—Bing
