An edition of 3,000 copies. ¶  "Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1938, Rosario Ferré was a prominent Puerto Rican writer, poet, and essayist. She was the daughter of Luis A. Ferré, Puerto Rico's third elected Governor and founder of the New Progressive Party. After her mother's death, Rosario served as First Lady until 1972. She began her writing career at 14, contributing to El Nuevo Día newspaper. Initially an advocate for independence, she later supported statehood like her father. Educated in Puerto Rico and Massachusetts, she earned her BA in English and French from Manhattanville College and later pursued a master's at the University of Puerto Rico. She founded the literary journal "Zona de Carga y Descarga," which ran from 1972 to 1975 and focused on promoting new writers and independence movement ideas. She completed her PhD in Latin American Literature from the University of Maryland. Ferré initially wrote in Spanish, publishing her first short story collection "Papeles de Pandora" in 1976. She later began writing in English, self-translating her book "Maldito Amor" She also penned a biography of her father and worked as a professor at various universities, including the University of Puerto Rico, Rutgers, and Johns Hopkins. Among her honors, Ferré won the Ateneo Puertorriqueño short story prize in 1974 and the Liberatur Prix in 1992 for the German translation of "Maldito Amor." She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004 and an honorary doctorate from Brown University in 1997."
