Inscribed and signed by author. / "Albert Verwey (1865-1937) was a significant figure in Dutch literature, known primarily for his work as a poet and critic. He was part of the Movement of the Eighties (also known as the Tachtigers), a prominent literary movement in the Netherlands that emphasized the aesthetic qualities of literature and sought to elevate Dutch literary standards. Verwey began writing poetry at a young age and published his first collection, "Persephone and Other Poems," in 1883. His early work was influenced by the poet Shelley and by his contemporaries in the Tachtigers, especially Willem Kloos, with whom he had a close but tumultuous friendship. In addition to his poetry, Verwey was known for his literary criticism. He was a co-founder and editor of the influential literary journal "De Nieuwe Gids" (The New Guide), which was a platform for the Tachtigers. However, he left the journal after a few years due to disagreements with Kloos. In the later part of his career, Verwey became a professor of Dutch Literature at the University of Leiden. His later poetry is often considered more difficult and philosophical than his earlier work." —Bing ¶ Romantisme -- Angleterre -- Histoire et critique. Romanticism. Romantiek.
