Volume 1 only (of two). / Princeton Studies in American Civilization; no. 4 [series] / "Stow Persons (1913-1998) was an American historian and educator who was a professor of history at the University of Iowa for many years. Persons was known for his work on American intellectual history. His book "American Minds: A History of Ideas," published in 1958, is a comprehensive survey of American thought from the colonial period to the mid-20th century. The book covers a wide range of topics, including religion, philosophy, social theory, and science, and it is notable for its broad scope and its emphasis on the continuity of American intellectual traditions. In addition to his work on intellectual history, Persons also wrote about the history of higher education. His book "The University in Transition," published in 1966, examines the changes in American universities during the 20th century, with a particular focus on the impact of the Cold War. Persons retired from the University of Iowa in 1981, but he continued to write and publish on a variety of historical topics." / Socialism -- History. Socialism -- Bibliography.
