Walter Kuhlman (1918–2009) was a first-generation figure of the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism. Born in St. Paul to Danish immigrants, he trained under Cameron Booth, took a degree at Minnesota in 1941, spent the war as a Navy medical illustrator, and arrived at the California School of Fine Arts in 1947 on the GI Bill — into the hothouse Douglas MacAgy had built around Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, and Ad Reinhardt. He took a studio in Sausalito's Industrial Center Building and became one of the Sausalito Six, the group behind the 1948 portfolio *Drawings*, whose seventeen offset lithographs are now the touchstone document of the moment. His work was shown in the 1950–51 Paris exhibitions that introduced American Abstract Expressionism to Europe, and he studied at the Grande Chaumière in 1951. Where several of his contemporaries hardened into signature styles, Kuhlman kept moving — later decades turned toward the figure and toward archetypal, mythic subject matter, though he never abandoned the underlying scaffolding: \"Painting has to have an abstract substructure. Otherwise it isn't worth a damn.\" He taught for four decades — CSFA, Stanford, New Mexico, Michigan, and Sonoma State from 1969 to 1988 — was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1995, and died in Sausalito in 2009. He is held by the Metropolitan, the Whitney, SFMOMA, and the British Museum, and remains, like most of the Bay Area group outside Diebenkorn, undervalued relative to his New York peers.Sources:- [Walter Kuhlman — Wikipedia](https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walter_Kuhlman)- [Walter Egel Kuhlman biography — Annex Galleries](https:\/\/www.annexgalleries.com\/artists\/biography\/1309\/Kuhlman\/Walter)Art américain -- 21e siècle -- Expositions.
