Logan \/ Hominy Okla” (year partly illegible) -- see last photo. Recipient almost certainly Jesse Bartley Milam (1884–1949), Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation through the 1940s, Claremore oilman, and among the foremost collectors of American Indian books in Oklahoma. He catalogued his “Indian Library” on cards and was said to have spent a fortune on it, and at his death it held what was then the outstanding collection on the Cherokee in the state. No bookplate, though Milam used one in many of his books. His family kept the library intact until giving it to the University of Tulsa in 1989, when duplicates were sold to endow a fund in his name, a likely route for this copy. The giver wrote from Hominy, an Osage town on the site of an 1874 Osage sub-agency and home to an Osage Logan family. That points to a gift from within the tribe whose ceremonial life the volume records, to a Cherokee chief who was assembling the record of Indian peoples. A fine conjunction of subject, giver and owner: the foundational study of Osage ritual, passed hand to hand in Indian Territory’s successor state. ¶ Annual record of the Smithsonian’s ethnological bureau under F. W. Hodge as ethnologist-in-charge, whose administrative report opens the volume. Its substance is the accompanying paper: Francis La Flesche’s study of the Osage rite of the chiefs and the “sayings of the ancient men.” This is the first installment of his monumental Osage series, continued in the bureau’s thirty-ninth report with the rite of vigil and in later volumes. La Flesche (1857–1932), an Omaha and the son of the Omaha leader Joseph La Flesche (Iron Eye), was the first Native American to work as a professional ethnologist for the bureau. He had earlier written the classic study of his own people with Alice C. Fletcher. Built from years of work with Osage ritual keepers, the paper records the tribe’s sacred recitations in Osage with English translations, on a scale few American ethnographies matched. Illustrated with plates. A cornerstone of Plains religious ethnography and of Osage cultural history, still drawn on by the Osage Nation itself.Annual report of the Bureau of American Ethnology; 36th, 1914-1915; Variation: Smithsonian Institution.; Bureau of American Ethnology.; Annual report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution; 36th, 1914-1915.
