ISBN: 086571133X ((pbk.)); 9780865711334 ((pbk.))

Founding handbook of the Council of All Beings, the deep-ecology ritual developed by the Australian rainforest activist John Seed and the Buddhist scholar and activist Joanna Macy, with Pat Fleming and the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess. The title is from Aldo Leopold’s essay in A Sand County Almanac (1949), which argues that unless people can identify with the ecosystem, disaster is inevitable. A mixed gathering of poems, essays, invocations, meditations and practical workshop guidance. It includes Robinson Jeffers’s “Passenger Pigeons,” Gary Snyder’s “Gatha for All Threatened Beings,” Barbara Deming’s “Spirit of Love,” Macy’s “Bestiary” and “Gaia Meditations,” and Naess’s “Self Realization: An Ecological Approach to Being in the World.” Closes with a full workshop manual. Its stages run from mourning and telling ecological life stories to being “chosen” by another life form, making a mask in silence, and speaking for that creature in council, followed by sample agendas. Built on Macy’s “despair and empowerment” work, later called the Work That Reconnects, and on Seed’s notion that the rainforest activist is the part of the forest that has recently begun to think, defending itself. Illustrated throughout with Dailan Pugh’s drawings of Australian rainforest. Grew out of workshops run with groups at Lismore, New South Wales, including the Rainforest Information Centre and the Big Scrub Environment Centre. Later translated into a dozen languages and reissued by New Society’s New Catalyst Books imprint (2007).
