The third printing of first edition of the anthology drawn from Amazon Quarterly, published by the editors’ own Amazon Press in Oakland in 1975, with cover drawing and graphics by Sharon Behrends. Gina Covina and Laurel Galana began Amazon Quarterly in the summer of 1972 in the basement of their Oakland home. It was a lesbian-feminist arts journal, often described as the first national literary magazine published from a lesbian perspective, and it took part in a wider wave of lesbian print culture that included Daughters of Bilitis newsletters and small papers from Boston to Los Angeles. The editors also crossed the United States and Canada on a 12,000-mile “lesbians around the country” expedition, gathering fifty-two taped interviews that became their companion volume, The New Lesbians (1977). Gathered from the magazine’s three-year run, the anthology collects short stories, essays, and poetry, including Donna Richards’s “The Lesbian Love Ethic,” “Woman Becoming,” and “I Dream in Female: The Metaphors of Evolution.” It closes with a bibliography (pp. 243–247), itself a useful record of what was then available to lesbian readers. 247 pages, illustrated. An East Bay document of the movement’s small-press moment, issued from the same home where the magazine was made.Contents: How to make love to woman if you're a woman \/ Jennie Orvino -- Woman becoming \/ Irene Yarrow -- Coming out \/ Jacqueline Lapidus -- The woman who walked into the night \/ Sandy Boucher -- Two mountains \/ Miriam Dyak -- The lesbian love ethic \/ Donna Martin -- Love and Dr. Kinsey \/ Linnea Due -- Oliver \/ Ina Ann Ormond -- The sender of drama \/ Karen Feinberg -- Hands \/ Maud Haimson -- Asterisk \/ Laurel Galana -- She lived in a shoe \/ Cynthia Carr -- Rolling in the mouth \/ Kathy Hruby -- Conversation \/ Laurel Galana -- Rosey Rightbrain's exorcism\/invocation \/ Gina Covina -- Polemic #1 \/ Honor Moore -- I dream in female: the metaphors of evolution \/ Barbara Starrett -- Radical reproduction: X without Y \/ Laurel Galana -- Waiting for something to happen \/ Jennie Orvino -- Womanblood \/ Frances Rooney -- The song of the woman with her parts coming out \/ Susan Griffin -- The Oedible complex: feminism and vegetarianism \/ Carol Adams -- Reading at the village gate \/ Martha Shelley -- Distinctions: the circle game \/ Laurel Galana -- Notations: the F train \/ Joan Larkin -- The strange and the familiar: the evolutionary potential of lesbianism \/ Peggy Allegro -- Eat rice have faith in women \/ Fran Winant -- Toward a womanvision \/ Laurel Galana -- A woman is talking to death \/ Judy Grahn -- The universe in you: suggestions for sexual syncopation \/ Ouija -- How to make a magazine \/ Laurel Galana -- Further reading. | Women Studies; Homosexuality, Female Lesbianisme.
