Hardcover.

Handsome 'Kneph' bookplate, presumably of John Yarker (1833 to 1913), who was the main promoter of the Antient and Primitive Rite of Masonry, a fringe Masonic rite. From 1881 to 1900 he ran The Kneph, the Rite's official journal. The plate shares its name. He matters beyond Masonry. He chartered Theodor Reuss, Franz Hartmann, and Henry Klein to found a German branch, and he authorized Aleister Crowley to restart the Rite. That makes him a key link in the founding of the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), an occult order Crowley later led. Kneph himself is an Egyptian creator god that Greek writers described as a serpent, which is likely why the serpent is central to the design.
