Paul Delvaux (1897–1994) was a Belgian painter whose mature work, from the mid-1930s on, made him one of the most recognizable figures of Surrealism, though he never formally joined the movement and kept his distance from its theorizing. Trained at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, he spent his twenties working in a Post-Impressionist and then Expressionist manner before encounters with the paintings of Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, and a visit to a fairground anatomical museum, turned him toward the dream-lit iconography he would repeat with remarkable consistency for the rest of his life: somnambulant nude women, pale and wide-eyed, wandering among classical colonnades, deserted railway stations, and moonlit suburban streets, often accompanied by bowler-hatted men and skeletons who seem not to see them. His painting is at once meticulously academic in handling and hallucinatory in effect, a cool, silent theatre of desire and estrangement in which nothing quite happens. He taught at the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture et des Arts Décoratifs (La Cambre) in Brussels, was elected to the Belgian Royal Academy, and in later years his work was gathered at the Musée Paul Delvaux in Saint-Idesbald on the Belgian coast, which remains the principal collection of his paintings, drawings, and prints. | Engraving, Belgian -- Catalogs.
