Two classic monographs under John Wesley Powell’s directorship. John Murdoch, naturalist and observer on the International Polar Expedition to Point Barrow (1881–1883), contributes the fullest account of the Iñupiat of Alaska’s northern tip from the period. Packed with more than four hundred drawings of material culture, it ranges from snow houses and tobacco pouches to walrus harpoons, antler tools and amulets, and remains a foundational source for Arctic archaeology and ethnography. Captain John Gregory Bourke of the Third Cavalry follows with his celebrated study of Apache medicine-men. Its three chapters cover their modes of treating disease, their beliefs and paraphernalia; hoddentin, the tule pollen used as a sacrificial powder, with wider remarks on sacred powders and offerings; and the izze-kloth, or medicine cord. Bourke wrote from long service in the Apache campaigns, and his chapters are illustrated with striking color plates of ritual objects. Folding maps of the Point Barrow region. Daughter of the missionary Samuel Austin Worcester, she was born at Brainerd Mission among the Eastern Cherokee and went west with the family after removal. From 1850, with her husband William Schenck Robertson, she worked at the Tullahassee Mission, where the couple became the principal means by which the Creek language was put into print. She translated the entire New Testament into Muskogee (Creek). In 1892, the year this volume appeared, Wooster awarded her an honorary doctorate, said to be the first given to a woman in the United States. Mother of Alice Mary Robertson, later Oklahoma’s first congresswoman. A working linguist’s copy of the bureau’s ethnological series, from the hand of the foremost scholar of the Creek language of her day. ¶ Contents: Report of the director -- Ethnological results of the Point Barrow Expedition \/ John Murdoch -- Medicine-men of the Apache \/ John G.
