Second edition of Ortiz’s first book and the opening volume of his Hampa Afrocubana series, which continued with Los negros esclavos and the posthumous Los negros curros. Written in the wake of his years in Italy studying under Lombroso and Ferri, and carrying Lombroso’s letter-prologue, in which the master asks for chapters for his Archivio di psichiatria and urges measurement of cranial anomalies in sorcerers against “normal” Black subjects. Squarely in the Italian positivist school: brujería, ñañiguismo and the Afro-Cuban orisha cults (Shangó, Eleguá, Santa Bárbara syncretism) read as atavistic survivals of an African “mala vida” feeding Havana’s criminal underworld, with case material drawn from court records, police files and the press. Despite the racialist frame, the earliest systematic ethnographic record of Afro-Cuban religion, and the seed of Ortiz’s life’s work. Its author’s later trajectory runs from criminologist to Cuba’s great anti-racist anthropologist: the coinage of “afrocubano” and of transculturation, the repudiation in El engaño de las razas.
