Laid in is a four-page pamphlet \"Recuerdo de la Santa Mision\". Published anonymously. It is attributed to the Jesuit Esteban Antícoli, an Italian-born priest working in Mexico (his Italian birth is from training knowledge). It is a defense of the 1531 Guadalupe apparitions to Juan Diego, which Antícoli presents as historical fact. He wrote it because works circulated about three years earlier had shaken the faith of Guadalupan believers. His later Historia de la aparición (1897) describes how the book came together. He combined his earlier printed pieces with new chapters, at the request of a Guadalajara cleric whose name is cut off in the snippet I found, and that cleric paid for the printing. The earlier pieces included the anonymous Disertación of 1882 and newspaper articles on the national patronage festivities. Antícoli argued for the apparition from Indigenous history, from unbroken tradition, from papal approval of the cult, and from the supposedly miraculous painting and its survival. He also answered the standard objections, and in 1897 he claimed the Compendio had already refuted all of them. The book belongs to the apparitionist side of the fierce 1880s–90s Guadalupan controversy, which led up to the image's papal coronation in 1895.Virgen de Guadalupe -- apariciones y milagros -- México.
