Hardcover.

Standard interwar American manual on the practice of banking shrubs and evergreens along a building’s base, by a landscape writer who had already co-written a general guide to home grounds with Arthur J. Jennings. Arranged as a critical picture book: more than two hundred photographs, many paired with planting plans drawn in green, each discussed in the text with praise or criticism of the scheme shown. Ranges beyond houses to garages, outbuildings, schools and factories, with separate attention to nook and corner plantings. Closes with illustrated descriptions of specimen evergreens and shrubs, so readers could see what each recommended plant looked like. A document of an American convention at its height. The practice had taken hold as Victorian houses rose on high foundations and as basement furnaces exposed more of their raw walls, and by the early 1920s the term was fixed in the landscape vocabulary. Its stated aim was to hide unsightly walls and tie the house to its ground. Later critics would fault the habit as overdone. Valuable now as a photographic record of period suburban and institutional grounds. Reissued by another New York house a decade later. ¶ Landscape gardening. Evergreens. Shrubs.
