Life of the Lithuanian-born lexicographer and journalist, the central figure in reviving Hebrew as a spoken language. Born Eliezer Yitzhak Perelman in Luzhki in 1858. Yeshiva-trained, then drawn to the Haskalah, the Jewish Enlightenment, before a Russian gymnasium and medical studies in Paris, which tuberculosis cut short. Settled in Jerusalem in 1881, where he and his wife Deborah made the first Hebrew-speaking household; their son Ben-Zion, later Itamar Ben-Avi, became the first child in modern times raised with Hebrew as his mother tongue. Taught at the Alliance school on condition that his classes be in Hebrew, and founded the weeklies Mevasseret Tsiyon and Hatsvi (both 1884), which the Ottoman authorities shut down more than once. Excommunicated by Orthodox opponents, and briefly jailed after rivals mistranslated a Hanukkah line in his paper as a call to revolt. Co-founded the Va’ad HaLashon (Hebrew Language Committee), forerunner of the Academy of the Hebrew Language. Life’s work was the Complete Dictionary of Ancient and Modern Hebrew, which coined vocabulary for modern life; his widow Hemda and son Ehud carried it to its seventeenth and final volume in 1959. Died in Jerusalem in December 1922, a month after the British Mandate recognized Hebrew as an official language of the Jews of Palestine. ¶  Jews -- Biography.
