Uruguayan lawyer, journalist and politician Alberto Palomeque (1852–1937) on the two years that remade Uruguayan politics, listed among his journalism and probably gathered from his writings of the period. The years in question run from Aparicio Saravia’s Blanco uprising of 1897 and the assassination of President Juan Idiarte Borda that August, through the Pact of La Cruz that ended the war, to Juan Lindolfo Cuestas’s coup of February 1898. Palomeque, born in Montevideo, founded the Revista Uruguaya (1875) and the Revista Judicial del Sud (1875–1880), edited La Opinión Pública, and presided over the Ateneo, whose Anales he also founded. A prolific chronicler of his own public life, he produced a run of self-documenting volumes: Mi año político (8 vols., 1888–1896), Mis derrotas (1899), Triunfos! (1900) and Mi expulsión (1902). This volume sits squarely in that sequence. He later took Argentine citizenship (1904) and turned to diplomatic history in Orígenes de la diplomacia argentina (1905). Died in Buenos Aires. ¶ Uruguay.
