Pocketbook original. A Penguin Special; S 156. / 'William Gallacher (1881–1965) was a Scottish trade unionist and politician, best known for his role as a leader in the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for West Fife from 1935 to 1950, and again for West Fife from 1955 to 1957. Born in Paisley, Scotland, Gallacher worked in various manual labor jobs before becoming involved in the labor movement. He was a key figure in the 1919 Glasgow rent strikes and the 40-hour strike, which sought to reduce the working week to 40 hours. These events led to his arrest and imprisonment on charges of incitement to riot. Gallacher joined the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1920 and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of its leading figures. He was elected to Parliament in 1935, becoming one of the first two Communist MPs in the UK. He was known for his passionate speeches and his commitment to the cause of workers' rights. In addition to his political work, Gallacher was also a writer. He wrote several books on politics and history, including "The Case for Communism" and "Revolt on the Clyde," an account of the labor struggles in Glasgow in the early 20th century." / Communism -- Great Britain.
