New York: Harper, 1855 (1843). Later edition. Large octavo in sturdy dark green polished buckram cloth; xiii, 942 pages; small b&w illustrations; 20 cm; index of names. Sewn. Mid-20th-Century buckram professioinal re-binding that is heavily sewn but not overly tight. Very minor foxing to some leaves; a very few tiny small pencil marks sparsely throughout; a small dampstain to upper outer corner of prelims and first few pages. All in all, very good thus. The binding is supremely sturdy. Hardcover.
Uncommon. In Latin & English, with the Aeneid in Latin followed by approximatley 600 pages of in-depth notes, including some illustrations. Anthon (1797-1867) was an American classical scholar and a professor at Columbia College where he later became headmaster of its grammar and preparatory school. He produced numerous classical works for schools, which contained assistance and translations in the notes. He had a disagreement with Martin Harris over an account where they discussed the authenticity of the Anthon Transcript of the Book of Mormon.
